Drums For Beginners/Improvers: Fills That Emphasise Off-Beats
Shoutout to channel member Tom who was playing with this idea today, the age-old classic drum fill idea of emphasising the offbeats - that is the "+"s in an eighth note flow and the "e"s and "a"s in a 16th note flow.

Hi Mike, thanks for the clearly explained techniques on Moeller and finger control! In the song by System of a down “Jet Pilot” in the verse do you think John is using the moeller technique to play the eighth note pattern?

The introduction of the 2 bass notes in quick succession in grade 3, kicked my rear end at the start. Could not do it. At first i could not even do a few bars without my feet starting to twich out of control and shaking. After a few months of doing it in songs that require it, albeit at slower tempos, i am starting to get the hang of it. U2 - A Man and a Woman as well as Sade - Smooth Operator come to mind. U2's song just killed my leg in the beginning. Killed them. I am so happy that i am now starting to get the hang of the prolonged double bass drum hits. Smooth Operator is a cool song. The double rim shots at first threw me off but ive got it now. Practice practice practice is the key

Do you know Palm Olive? RAINCOATS first drummer, she's my favourite, she's brilliant on every song on their first album.. But I suggest you listen to "no looking" if you haven't got a lot of spare time.. It's got a deliciously simple clompy cyclic pattern which she really slows down and speeds up like nobody thought they dare get away with!! So it's playful and challenging and cheeky too!! It's well worth a listen if you're not familiar.. Philosophically you're already on the same page as her... You're most welcome!

You admit you are inclined to cut corners too.. Which is exactly why you know what you're on about. Once again I'm very impressed by you! and determined to go slower and then even slower.. I'll have to re learn a lot of things.. Face up to it as you suggest.. Teaching is an art form with a lot of psychology and philosophy to understand as well as the science of my brain and how it needs to tell my muscles what to do from scratch.. Everyday for the NEXT 30 years.. Fuck I'll be 93!! and I still believe reincarnation is a type of highly processed tinned milk!! I'm definitely going to require more time to play like a Jaki Leibezeit. or a Palm Olive or a John French... So... START EARLY KIDS!!! and use this guys method... S L. O. W IT D. O. W. N !!!!!!!!!

I'd also like to add that Keith lead his fills usually with his kick drum. So if you aren't kicking out 8ths and you are about to fill start kicking them out then explode off your snare increasing how loud you are as you progress through the fill.

You're reminding me off 2 mesmerising similar beats on Bowies ziggy stardust.. The songs "Five years" . B-Bum Bum. Ka ka begins repeats as the gorgeous fade out and slightly more funky Soul Love Tsss Bum ka ka ba ba ba ba pa ka... Slightly wonky and sparse beats-I would find v. difficult to write down, can you ? by( I believe) Woody Woodmansy.?! Who plays on all my 5 favourite most iconic David Bowie albums. I'm not sure if I'm talking sense?!

Do you want me to only practise fills after 4(?)bars? or is OK to practice fills on EVERY 4th beat? IS that a bad habit to get into? Then possibly difficult to get out of?.. You want me playing the groove rock steady as priority and too many fills might throw me off the pulse?!

I often mess about on drums and guitar going through all my botanical plant names, thus multi tasking, walking And chewing gum... Examples.. Quercus robur 4..Quercus Petraer.. 5..Lychnis flos-cuculi..Viburnum opulus 6 convolvulus floridus or Echium decaisnei or Fraxinus excelsior all 7. Caraluma buchardii or Euonymus europaeus 8. convolvulus lopez - socasi 9 Metasequoia gliptostroboides 10.. I don't think it's doing me any harm do you?.. There's something in "if you can say it, you can play it". I dont know so many animals.. I'd like to learn Britains 16 large mammals we made extinct since becoming farmers 5 or 6000 years ago.. I wonder which beats are lying in wait?! It's almost as good as playing heavy metal records backwards and hearing " I love satan". I know the Auroch is Bos primigenius.. Which is a 6..that's a start!!! Emphasis on B and p of the epithet! Ha ha!

You've got a very engaging teaching style.. A bit too skint currently to join up, buy an electronic kit you recommend, maybe a coffee sometimes.. You really deserve enough dough to devote your time to teaching us. You have a great way of teaching the practical skills and your philosophy is bang on.. Thirdly you try and remember great music has heart and feel and passion.. Is it the triplet of body, mind and spirit? Are they equal thirds of a person when they're a full blown musician? I'm guessing the body can never be ignored? We have to teach with our brains to give our bodies the muscle memory, by taking beats apart and playing hands and feet in the precise order almost annoyingly slowly., philosophy is the mind and feel and passion is the spirit and they take care of themselves? As the body learns the mind and spirit simply follow?.. Something like that is what you mean? Am I getting warm?

    I know time IS divided into 1,4s 8s and 16s..but I'm curious as to why? I think a waltz 12 3 is also divided into 1e and a 2 e and a 3 e and a 1 etc
